NCTD celebrates 50 years of BREEZE service

In 1975, the California legislature established the North San Diego County Transit Development Board to plan, design, and build a comprehensive public transit network in northern San Diego County. In 1976, the Board acquired the municipal bus systems of Escondido and Oceanside. Today, that bus service is BREEZE, and serves as the transportation backbone for North County, serving the communities of Bonsall, Buena Creek, Carlsbad, Del Mar, Encinitas, Escondido, Fallbrook, Oceanside, Pala, San Marcos, Solana Beach, and Vista, as well as parts of San Diego.

Over the years, NCTD has added rail service on COASTER, between San Diego and Oceanside, and SPRINTER, between Escondido and Oceanside. Just as the San Diego Trolley kickstarted a wave of light rail systems in U.S. cities, SPRINTER paved the way for diesel ‘hybrid rail’ transit lines like DART’s Silver Line, Austin’s CapMetro Red Line, and Metrolink’s Arrow. NCTD also operates FLEX point-deviate or commuter shuttle service in San Pasqual, Ramona, Camp Pendleton, and Sorrento Valley, as well as LIFT paratransit.

NCTD has also become a vital part of San Diego’s transportation network over the past 50 years, beyond just servicing point-to-point trips in North County. MTS and NCTD share a dispatch and radio system, as well as maintenance of the PRONTO fare system, and NCTD is responsible for right-of-way maintenance and service dispatching along the LOSSAN rail corridor in San Diego County, which hosts not just COASTER but Amtrak and Metrolink trains.

As NCTD, now North County Transit-San Diego Railroad, celebrates 50 years of BREEZE service, celebrations are underway throughout the system. Two specially-wrapped BREEZE buses (one each from the Oceanside and Escondido bases) are running around the system, and a variety of promotional items have also been produced.
