Mental Health Resources

BuildSD cares about our contributors and community members. We know the world can get tough sometimes, so we've compiled resources on how to take care of yourself here.

Stay connected. There is hope.

If you or someone you know needs urgent support, call or text 988 or chat: 988lifeline.org.
In an emergency, such as if you have seriously harmed or injured yourself, DO NOT WAIT to call 911.

Reach out to a friend

One of the best ways to support your own mental health, and the mental health of those around you, is to check in with people you care about. You don't need to lead with mental health issues - just check in and see how your friends are doing. Some signs of mental health struggles to look out for might include:

  • > Impulsive behaviors or being more irritated than usual
  • > Not functioning like their usual selves (i.e., change in habits of how they dress, general appearance, eating or sleep habits)
  • > Talking about feelings of loneliness or despair
  • > Excessive worry
  • > Trouble concentrating
  • > Substance misuse

Finding community

San Diego is a large urban area, and it can be hard to find people to talk to. Luckily, you have a start by being here. BuildSD and other community organizations host a variety of social mixers and other events throughout the year that can be great opportunities to meet new people who are also interested in issues of urbanism and transportation. If you're a student, consider looking for clubs or student activities at your school that you're interested in. Even once you make the decision and make time to attend a social event, it can be difficult to meet people who align with your interests or values and to become friends with them. The best thing to do here is to introduce yourself to people and keep talking! Don't be afraid to ask someone what they're interested in.
