MTS is currently planning to reconfigure the 12th and Imperial bus bays to both add more capacity to their transit center, allowing easier connections and bus lanes on nearby roads, and to facilitate development on this site (which is a separate article).
This plan would expand the number of bus bays from 6 to 12, many of which being planned for 60 ft buses. This also will allow for entrance and exit from both sides of the bus area, allowing more operational flexibility and buses to run thru the transit center without having to loop around a block to enter. The entrance and exit to the north was split up to allow more space for development and to make operations easier.
The bus bay reconfiguration will be done in conjunction with a 2nd phase to the 12th and Imperial TOD project to minimize disruptions during construction. Because of how this project will work there is currently no planned start date. By the time this project starts 2 new Rapid projects will likely stop there, Rapid 12 to Spring Valley being proposed by MTS and Rapid 640 as an express to the Blue Line Trolley between Downtown and San Ysidro.
