UPDATE 5/13/2026: This project land is for sale, and the project itself is likely dead. We are marking it as "stalled".

An empty lot on Market Street in the Gaslamp Quarter is planned to become a new hotel. Citizen Hotel San Diego will be like their locations across the country, the essentials for a luxury experience. Citizen M Hotels skip large rooms, or room service while giving guests the quality necessities they want. A good nights rest and a good place to relax. They do this with small rooms made for 2, comfortable beds, custom lighting, easy to use tech features like smart ac and tv controlled by a tablet. The idea of this hotel is somewhere where you go to sleep and wake up to enjoy the city. To get a quick breakfast and spend the rest of the day at the beach, or doing business, or visiting friends and family. The building will also have a rooftop pool and bar, a fitness room, a ground floor bar, and small dining room for breakfast.

The location of this hotel is ideal, in a San Diego Union Tribune interview with Eli Sokol of Citizen M Hotels "“We had looked at this area over the years, and it’s in one of the most well-rounded neighborhoods, with the convention center, ballpark, a really healthy mix of leisure and business". To add to this public transit is a short walk away, and there are 2 bikeways nearby on 6th Avenue and J Street. It is also located 2 blocks from 5th Avenue, the main street of the Gaslamp Quarter. There will be many reasons for people to stay in this "simple luxury" hotel.
