Downtown // Another massive step toward redeveloping Downtown's Courthouse/Jail area
West, known during development at Courthouse Commons, is a 37-floor mixed-use tower in Downtown San Diego. The massive complex has 431 apartments, 275,000 square feet of office space, and 17,182 square feet of ground floor retail. The building replaced the entire block of Front Street, Union Street, W C Street, and W Broadway, formerly taken up by the southernmost block of the San Diego County Courthouse and Jail complex that spanned three blocks in downtown.
The developer of West was Vancouver, WA-based Holland Partner Group. Holland was chosen by the county as part of its request for proposals for the aging and pedestrian-hostile courthouse and jail property. The building was designed by San Diego-based architecture firm Carrier Johnson + Culture. The design is very striking: on its face a simple contemporary glass-clad tower akin to many of the other new ones in San Diego, but supplanted by a massive cantilever of the building’s office segment over a public plaza, hoisted by V-shaped columns.
After San Diego’s new courthouse building opened in October 2017 enabling the demolition of the old one, demolition on the West site began by early 2020, with building construction beginning by early 2021. The building was built by Holland’s construction arm.
The office portion of the building takes up floors 2-8. Tenants in the office portion include the newest offices of San Diego’s planning organization SANDAG and infrastructure design firm HNTB. The residential portion of the building has an amenity floor on both the 9th and 37th floors, with a rooftop pool on the 37th.
West opened on July 15, 2024, a massive second step toward the Courthouse area’s ideal full redevelopment—the third step of which will be the future opening of The Torrey, also by Holland.
